NATIONAL BIRD
The Grenada Dove (Lepotila Wellsi) currently numbers less than 140 and is found only in Grenada.
MAIN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
Agriculture has been the backbone of the economy for many years. Grenada, also known as the Isle of Spice, is the world's second largest producer of nutmeg. Grenada also produces bananas, cocoa and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, tonka beans, ginger and sapot. In recent times the tourism industry has shown signs of positive growth.
HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL DATA
Grenada was discovered by its indigenous peoples long before it was sighted by Columbus in 1498. Grenada is mountainous and thickly wooded, with streams and rivers. The central mountain mass consists of a number of ridges, some of which contain crater basins. Grand Etang Lake in the Parish of St Andrew's and Lake Antoine in St Patrick's are examples of these basins. There are 45 outstanding beaches which extend from Levera in the North (St Patrick's) to Grand Anse in the South (St George's). Grenada has had a very turbulent political history including a revolution in 1979 and a military intervention in 1983.

Carriacou, one of Grenada's dependants, is a land of rich cultural heritage. The people's philosophy of life is rooted in the potpourri of African and European elements reflecting centuries of colonial rule. Predominant among the traditional folklore in Carriacou is the renowned African National Dance popularly known as the Big Drum.
