ECCB Highlights the Importance of Food Security

30 June 2025, Basseterre, Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis – The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) is encouraging citizens and residents of the Eastern Caribbean Union (ECCU) to view farming as an important factor in the promotion and sustainability of food security.

Speaking on this week’s episode of ECCB Connects, Owner and Manager of Nevis Hydro Gardens and veteran farmer, Daniel Arthurton, says that the dysfunction caused on food systems and global supply chains, along with the geo-political changes, should be a major concern for individuals, communities and the entire region. He says farming is the ultimate connection for food security and requires several factors such as land availability, accessibility and adaptability.

Arthurton emphasizes that two key forms of support for farmers are secure land tenure and an effective government extension service, both of which empower farmers to play a significant role in achieving food security. He also highlights that true food security stems from the collective success of farmers and urges more people to participate in backyard gardening at different levels.
