October Is Financial Literacy Month In The ECCU

Since 2002, October has been celebrated as Financial Literacy Month in the eight member countries of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union.

The theme for Financial Literacy Month 2006 is “Manage Your Money, Enhance Your Life”. It is intended to promote awareness and understanding of the various savings and spending choices that impact the finances of individuals and households and to encourage a desirable balance between spending, borrowing, savings and investments in order to achieve a successful financial life.
 
   
Activities planned for the member countries:

Grenada

Montserrat

St Kitts and Nevis

Saint Lucia

St Vincent and the Grenadines

General Activities planned for the month include:

 September 27 • 

Placement of flyers and banners promoting the theme.

 October 1

Declaration Speech – A speech by the Minister of Finance officially declaring open Financial Literacy Month 2006.

 October 1 Radio Interview with ECCB official commemorating the 23rd Anniversary of the ECCB, 1 October 1983 – 1 October 2006.
 October 3

Start of Newspaper Articles and Radio and Television Programmes on financial and economic management.

 October 4

Visits to Schools and Work Sites – Various financial institutions will make presentations at schools and work sites on issues related to the month’s theme.

 October 11

Launch of the Financial Literacy Schools Cartoon Contest. The objective of the contest is to increase financial literacy among the region's youth and the wider community by allowing young people to explore the concepts of money management and investing through a creative medium and in so doing raise their awareness and understanding of money matters.

 October 12

Start of Community Evening Sessions Focused on Personal Money Management to be held in community centres throughout the Federation. Topics to include (i) Creating Your Financial Plan (ii) How To Avoid Financial Crisis and What To Do If You See It Looming and (iii) The Four Pillars of Retirement - Social Security, Private Pensions, Personal Savings and Investments (iv) The Health of a Nation’s Financial System Depends on The Ability of Its People To Effectively Manage Their Own Finances.

 October 19

Radio Programme commemorating the 5th Anniversary of the ECSE – 19 October 2001 – 19 October 2006.

 October 20

Financial Literacy Fair – A fair dedicated to imparting knowledge of smart spending, wise use of credit and the benefits of regular saving and investing. The fair will include booths and displays by several of our financial institutions. A mini-lunch concert and short oral presentations on various financial topics will also be featured at the Fair.

 October 21

Children’s Library Hour - Discussions and activities on saving and investing at public libraries.
