Financial Literacy Month 2005

The theme selected for 2005 “Your Money, Your Future” seeked to call public attention to the impact that current spending and investment decisions have on an individual’s future.

Special areas of focus included evaluating personal net worth; the need to foster good spending habits; and the importance of wise investing to secure financial longevity.

The success of Financial Literacy Month relies on a team approach involving several committed partners from the media, the Ministries of Finance, Financial Institutions, public companies, social and religious groups and the general public.

Activities planned for the member countries were:

Antigua and Barbuda

Dominica

Grenada

Montserrat

St Kitts and Nevis

Saint Lucia

St Vincent and the Grenadines

General Activities planned for the month included:

Speech by Minister of Finance declaring open Financial Literacy Month, October 2005.

 

 October 1

Church sermon (Saturday worshippers) highlighting the Bible’s teachings on the responsible use of one’s money.

Church sermon (Sunday worshippers) highlighting the Bible’s teachings on the responsible use of one’s money.

Public airing (via radio) of winning speeches from 2004 Schools’ Public Speaking Contest “ Understanding Your Spending Habits”.

Airing on television of the ECCB Video “The EC Dollar and You: Part II”.

 

 October 4

Launch of Primary Schools’ Nursery Rhyme/Jingle Competition -Interview with ECCB and School representatives.

 

 October 7

Launch of stories of ordinary people who have achieved financial success. (Radio and print media)

 

 October 8

Discussion “Your Money, Your Future” on youth radio programmes. Guests from financial institutions will participate.

 

 October 10

Launch of Radio Financial Tips. Collective effort by financial institutions, public companies and the media. These will be in English as well as Spanish or Creole. NOTE: Some financial institutions, have also agreed to feature financial tips on their ATM statements.

 

 

Start of visits to schools and business by representatives from the financial sector and public companies.

 

 October 13

Radio interview with Financial Secretary on "Regional Government Securities Market"

 

 October 14

Financial Fair/Open House. Collective effort by financial institutions and public companies. This event provides an interactive forum where the general public can engage various experts on a range of financial issues: money management, investing in stocks and bonds, savings, retirement, insurance, real estate and loan financing for home, education, car and small business.

 

 October 15

Visit to Public Library for “Children’s Library Hour”.

 

 October 18

Panel Discussion – “Investing in Your Future - The ECSE and the RGSM”. Panelists from the ECSE, public companies, Ministry of Finance”.

 

 

Launch of anecdotes about money issues. (radio and print media)
